The Evolution of Trichromatic Vision

The results are published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences.Read more.

FDA-Cleared Lens “Helps” with Dyslexia

Students at the Brighton School in Baton Rouge, LA, have trouble reading. Words move, they go in and out of focus, or they float on the page. Other students see double words or sentences. They are dealing with dyslexia and dyslexia related learning disabilities. Now there’s reportedly hope with the new, patented and FDA cleared ChromaGen lenses. Developed by Dr. David Harris, the lens is said to employ 16 filtered lenses, thereby modifying lights' wavelength as it passes into each eye. This reportedly balances the speed of the information traveling along the neurological pathways to the brain and allowing many dyslexics to see words and text clearly. ChromaGen Vision tested 150 students at Brighton School. Approximately 72 percent were prescribed the ChromaGen lenses. The testers an increase in reading speed and accuracy and an Improvement in handwriting, says the company. The lens was introduced in 2011 (see related blog retry). Read more.

TN Ophthalmologists Running Radio Campaign against an OD Bill

The Tennessee Academy of Ophthalmology announced that it is running radio advertisements in response to Senate Bill 220 and House Bill 555. These bills would allow optometrists – who are not medical doctors – to inject anesthesia with a needle into the delicate tissues surrounding the eye for the purpose of performing surgeries on the eyelid to remove lesions, cysts and tumors. The 30-second advertisements are running on radio stations throughout the state and are designed to educate Tennesseans about this dangerous legislation that, if passed, would pose a risk to patient safety and would lower the quality of surgical eye care that Tennesseans currently receive. The Tennessee legislation comes on the heels of a proposal in the California legislature that would give allied health professionals, including optometrists, a greatly expanded scope of practice. If passed, the new law would allow optometrists to perform a multitude of surgical eye procedures. California legislators have cited the federal Affordable Care Act as justification for loosening the state’s quality of health care delivery. Read more.

Florida MD Claims ODs Asking for Too Much

“As an ophthalmologist, I am proud to say that the citizens of Florida have the best eye care of any state in the country. This is undoubtedly due to the thousands of outstanding ophthalmologists and optometrists who have been working side by side and in cooperation with each other for decades. Unfortunately, that quality of eye care is in serious jeopardy.” So goes a Miami Herald post. “This year a trade group of well financed optometrists — who are not medical doctors — are rushing the Legislature to pass legislation (SB 278 and HB 239) that for the first time in this State’s history would allow optometrists to prescribe a vast arsenal of potentially dangerous oral medications with absolutely no patient safeguards. If passed, this legislation would be one of the most liberal prescribing laws in the country, and would have none of the patient safety measures that are in the laws in other states. Simply put, these bills would give the Board of Optometry unbridled power to authorize optometrists to prescribe any drug except Schedule I and II narcotics.” Read more.

As he got older and became aware that there are many children who need glasses but lack the means to pay for them, he decided to do something about it. So two years ago, he founded Eye-See, a nonprofit charity that raises money to pay for eye exams and corrective lenses for children whose families are having a hard time making ends meet.” Read more.

TN MDs Oppose Bill Giving ODs the Right to Inject Local Anesthesia

In a survey conducted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, approximately 72 percent of responding member physicians predicted they would be forced to make decisions that will negatively affect the ability of their Medicare patients to receive the highest quality of medical care.
Specifically, 43 percent of ophthalmologists said they would be forced to close their practice to new Medicare beneficiaries or restrict the number of new program participants they see, while 28 percent predicted they would have to limit access of their current Medicare patients to urgent-care treatment only.  In addition, nearly 11 percent of respondents said they would be forced to consider changing or ending their participation status in the Medicare program. FDA Warns Internet Vendors of Decorative Contact Lenses

“FDA regulators this week issued a letter to online distributors, warning them to obey federal law or face punitive measures,” reports Mass Device. “Healthcare authorities reviewed a series of internet vendors which market decorative contact lenses, which do not help with vision but only change the appearance of the eye. Even though the lenses don't provide visual improvement, they do require a prescription by law, FDA regulators noted. ‘We advise you to review your websites, product labels and labeling, and promotional materials to ensure that the claims you make do not adulterate or misbrand your products,’ the FDA said. ‘Failure to promptly correct violations of the FDCA may result in enforcement action being initiated by FDA without further notice.’” Read more.

Six nutrients ― antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, essential fatty acids, vitamins C and E and the mineral zinc ― have been identified as helping to protect eye sight and promote eye health. Because the body doesn’t make these nutrients naturally, it’s important that they are incorporated into a daily diet and, in some cases, supplemented with eye vitamins.

Another BODO (Buy-One, Donate-One) Eyewear Company Pops Up Online

“Like most people, Katrina Shaw is shocked when she sees eyeglasses selling for upwards of $300,” says the post on The Record. As she did some research into that question, she discovered a huge industry that is dominated by one major player behind many of the big fashion brands. Then, when she visited Peru with a Wilfrid Laurier University student organization last August, she met people with visual impairments who can’t afford proper prescription eyeglasses. So, she thought, why not make affordable eyeglasses for people in North America, and add a socially responsible element to the business by donating a pair of glasses to someone in a developing country for every pair bought here?” She started Edgar Bruce Eyewear. Nationals Check More Than Their Eyes on the Ball

“During spring training last year, Corey Brown was sure his eyes were the reason he kept striking out. The Washington Nationals outfielder had 20/15 vision and never needed contact lenses or glasses, but he couldn’t always pick up off-speed pitches out of pitchers’ hands and react while batting. The communication between his eyes and brain just wasn’t happening fast enough,” notes a story from the Washington Post. “The team’s consulting eye doctor, Keith Smithson, recommended Brown do a variety of drills to improve the problem: toss around colored balls, field a ball with corners that made it roll unpredictably, and catch a tennis ball on one leg while wearing a pair of glasses that make it harder to see by creating a strobe-like effect. Brown made the exercises part of his routine. He enjoyed a career-best season in Class AAA Syracuse last year, cutting down his strikeout rate, raising his batting average to .285, launching 25 home runs and earning three call-ups to the big league team.” Read more and see the video “Eye Science in the Dugout” at the WP site.
