Implant Slows Vision Loss from AMD

An intraocular implant, labeled NT-501 by Neurotech Pharmaceuticals, reportedly slowed the progression of vision loss in individuals with geographiuc atrophy associated with dry, age-related, macular degeneration in a Phase 2 study published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). That's the word from MedicalNewsToday. The implant is said to consist of "human cells genetically modified to secrete ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) - a nerve growth factor capable of rescuing and protecting dying photoreceptors."
