An intraocular implant, labeled NT-501 by Neurotech Pharmaceuticals, reportedly slowed the progression of vision loss in individuals with geographiuc atrophy associated with dry, age-related, macular degeneration in a Phase 2 study published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The implant is said to consist of "human cells genetically modified to secrete ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) - a nerve growth factor capable of rescuing and protecting dying photoreceptors."
