Identity Theft of Health Care Practioners Leads to Insurance Fraud

The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is launching a drive to help keep health care practitioners from becoming victims of identify theft. This affects not only the health care practitioner but insurance companies and the Medicare system. Fraudsters start by stealing a practitioner's identifiers, such as his/her National Provider Identifier (NPI), Tax ID Number (TIN), and medical licensure information.Then they bill for procedures not performed by the practitioner.
