Delaware Cuts Medicaid Eye Care Coverage

"For four years, clients using Medicaid -- the federal-state health insurance program for the poor that currently serves an estimated 200,000 Delawareans -- had been able to get routine vision care and eyewear. Delaware's two privately managed care organizations -- Delaware Physician Care Inc. and United Healthcare Community Plan -- that administer Medicaid offered the benefit as an incentive to attract clients," reports DelawareOnline. "But with Medicaid costs expected to increase by $106 million this fiscal year, the state instructed managed care organizations to eliminate the benefit for adults. Delaware Physician Care Inc. provided routine vision care to about 12,000 adult Medicaid clients last year, at a cost just over $1 million. United Healthcare Community Plan did not release figures."
