Study Shows Loss of Visual Acuity Confused with Dementia

"When Grandma stops reading books, watching television or recognizing faces, family members often blame mind-degenerative disease such as Alzheimer's or dementia," starts The Plain Dealer post. "But it may not be memory loss alone. Vision deficits -- those that are untreatable with corrective lenses -- could be making it seem worse. In a recent study, investigators from Case Western Reserve University used the game of bingo to show that visually enhancing playing cards -- enlarging the cards, the numbers and the letters as well as increasing the visual contrasts between light and dark shades -- improved the game performance of people with neurodegenerative Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases."
