More on NBA Geek Chic--Now During the NBA Finals

"The way they fly around the basketball court, LeBron James and Kevin Durant often resemble Superman. Then they return to the locker room and come out looking like Clark Kent," says a Wall  Street Journal post. "Mr. James, Mr. Durant and many other superstars in the NBA playoffs have found a novel way to accessorize their bespoke suits: thick-rimmed, chunky, ostentatious eyeglasses. In the NBA, the new cool is geek chic.... Oklahoma City guard Russell Westbrook admits that his lenses are nonprescription. Like Mr. Westbrook, Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade has gone so far as to wear glasses without glass in them (or even plastic) ." Read more.

The New York Times reported:  "The shirt, adorned with images of singing and dancing hipsters dressed in funky pastels — suspended in a jazzy jam session of horn and bass players, with random cars zooming past — was an N.B.A. finals fashion statement begging to go viral. Westbrook tied together the ensemble with what has become his signature accessory, a pair of lensless oversize red eyeglass frames, which make him look like a cross between the preppy Carlton Banks of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the geeky Steve Urkel of Family Matters.” Read more. (This is confusing since Carlton did not wear eyewear--as a rule.)

As far as we know, Freakonomics first reported on this story last month. See our post. There was another post from the Washington Post about Durant and Westbrook even earlire than the Freakonomics piece.

Now that the world has noticed superstars and superheroes wearing eyewear without scripts, will the trend stop? Or will teens across the country bug parents for a pair of eyewear?
