New Anesthetic Treatment for Eye Disease
"In a new study, a light-sensitive moiety has been added to propofol, a commonly used anesthetic, allowing its narcotic effect to be controlled by light. The compound also offers a possible route to the treatment of certain eye diseases," reports Science Daily. "Inhibitory neurotransmitters dampen the activity of neurons. This regulatory effect forms the basis for the action of many anesthetics. For example, propofol, a common anesthetic, interacts with receptors on neural cell membranes that normally bind the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA). Binding of GABA opens protein channels through which negatively charged chloride ions stream into the cell. By raising the resting electrical potential across the membrane, this makes the cell less likely to fire in response to an incoming stimulus. Propofol magnifies this effect and this functions as an anesthetic." Read more.

Website Help s ODs Diagnose Marfan Syndrome
To help optometrists and other health care practitioners identify Marfan patients, the NMF (National Marfan Foundation) has developed a mobile website, MarfanDX.org, that features the Ghent Nosology for Marfan Syndrome. The nosology, published in 2010 by an international panel of experts in the diagnosis and management of Marfan syndrome, offers seven simple formulas for diagnosing Marfan syndrome. These formulas, along with an Interactive Systemic Score Calculator used to consider the lesser characteristics of Marfan syndrome throughout the body, such as facial features, manifestations in the arms and wrists, and severe myopia, and a Z-score calculator, are available to practitioners on MarfanDX.org. The site offers an interactive scorecard, complete with illustrations and details on each on manifestation.
The program will compute the patient’s Marfan Systemic Score and even provide a means to e-mail the results to a specialist.
Marfan syndrome (also called Marfan’s syndrome) is a potentially fatal, genetic, connective tissue disorder. Most of the readily visible signs of Marfan syndrome are associated with the skeletal system. Many individuals with the condition grow to above-average height. Some have long, slender limbs (dolichostenomelia) with long fingers and toes (arachnodactyly). However, life-threatening aortic tears and ruptures are the most serious aspect of the disease, the foundation emphasized. Eye conditions, including myopia, amblyopia, strabismus, glaucoma and retinal detachments are often early signs of Marfan syndrome. One-third of Marfan patients in a recent NMF survey said a dislocated lens in the eye was the first sign to raise suspicion that they might have the life-threatening health condition. However, only about 20 percent of respondents indicated an ophthalmologist (15 percent) or optometrist (4 percent) was the first person to suspect they might have Marfan syndrome. Read more.

Treating Ocular Trauma with RGP CLs
"Fitting a rigid gas-permeable contact lens (RGPCL) into the eyes of
patients treated surgically for ocular trauma can improve their visual
acuity and are well tolerated, report researchers from China," reports News Medical. "While
trauma such as corneal scarring and aphakia (absence of the lens of the
eye) are commonly treated with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, the
management of aphakia in particular can be complicated by a lack of
capsular support, remarks the team. The current findings indicate
that RGPCLs are a good alternative to IOL implantation; the visual
acuity of eyes fitted with these lenses improved significantly compared
with no correction, and was also improved compared with spectacles." Read more.

Millions of contact lens wearers are at risk from an eye-devouring amoeba that can cause blindness, experts have warned. Acanthamoeba is abundant in tap water as well as rivers, ponds and lakes. It can infect anyone who fails to clean their lenses properly, or keeps them in a dirty case, yet few people are aware of the parasite, and the condition it causes is often diagnosed wrongly or missed.
Each year in the UK doctors treat around 75 people infected with acanthamoeba. The number is small, but anyone unlucky enough to pick up the organism is in for an unpleasant experience. Acanthamoeba sticks to contact lenses and burrows its way through the cornea, causing acute pain. It feeds on bacteria and the corneal tissue.
