Safety Eyewear Market Increasing—Slowly

Over the five years to 2014, Protective Eyewear Manufacturing industry revenue is expected to grow at an annualized rate of 2.8% to $555.5 million, including an increase of 3.4% in 2014. The American Optometric Association estimates that 90.0% of these injuries could be reduced or prevented with the use of proper eye protection. The number of industry operators is estimated to increase at an average annual rate of 0.8%. Growth in the number of companies has been subdued due to major acquisition activity by the industry's largest players, 3M Company and Honeywell International Inc. Additionally, high manufacturing costs and rising prices for plastic materials have created an industry in which almost half of domestic demand is supplied through imports. Over the next five years, imports are expected to continue growing as domestic manufacturers focus on higher value-added products with increased functionality and design elements. Rising domestic demand will enable revenue to grow at a robust rate over the five years to 2019. Read more.

New Safety Eyewear from Gateway Safety

"Cold weather brings the possibility of lens fogging, the most common eyewear-related winter-weather hazard reported by outdoor employees. Wheelz goggles include a unique Whirlwind ventilation system, with 10 vents along the frame’s brow area and 10 additional vents on the frame¹s underside, to circulate air through the inner frame area between the face and lens," reports Utility Products. "The resultant strong 'whirlwind' of air helps clear the fog and maintain unhindered vision at all times. For additional fog prevention, an anti-fog coating is also available. Wheelz are unlike big and bulky traditional goggle styles. Their compact and lightweight frame is made of a soft, flexible material for all-day comfort. Wheelz goggles also feature an optional soft foam lining that not only helps with comfort, but also prevents snow and debris from blowing into the eyes. Additionally, mirrored-lens options help fight the glare that is often reflected from snow-covered surfaces." Read more.

College Squash Assn. Issues Warning about Safety Eyewear

"As the season gets underway, teams and players are reminded that proper eyewear is required for all college squash matches, including warmups and match play," notes a post from the College Squash Association. "Standard eyewear (i.e. everyday prescription glasses) may not be worn in place of acceptable eyewear. The CSA has detailed Eyewear Rules, which includes the following language:
"Approved eyewear must be worn for the entirety of a match, from the beginning of the warm-up until the match’s conclusion. Standard eyeglasses may not be worn in lieu of approved eyewear, even if the eyeglasses have plastic lenses. In the event of a player not having approved eyewear for their match, the rules for a self-inflicted injury apply. In the event that a player’s eyewear breaks during a match, the injury rule may be required to determine the result. This would only be needed in the case of prescription glasses that can not be immediately replaced. In the event of a player not having approved eyewear and a suitable replacement not being found, the player may forfeit the match."
